custom link colors might not happen

I'm having a lot of trouble implementing link colors into the theming scheme. I can't seem to make them change by script, at least not respecting visited links.

Since I am controlling the stylesheet by building it dynamically at the server (using PHP), I could just settle for the change taking effect on the next reload. But that's very unsatisfying. I let you click through and "try on" the different themes by updating them on the client (without a page reload), so the link color needs to work the same way. Maybe someone from the Asylum can bail me out.
