open source implementation of .NET

The Register reports on Mono, an open-source implementation of .NET's CLI (common language infrastructure), C# compliler, and class library. All of these have been submitted to ECMA by Microsoft for standards approval.

Miguel de Icaza, lead developer of GNOME project, is promising that Mono should be ready by the middle of 2002.
